Промежуточная контрольная работа по английскому языку за 1 полугодие

10 класс I – вариант.

I. Read the text. Write true (T), false (F) or not stated (NS) if the answer isn’t in the text.

Perhaps the most important reason we have schools is to prepare students to participate in society. Most of our schooling involves the use of our eyes to read and write. What happens though, when a child cannot see? Children who are blind face extra difficulties in understanding things the same way other children do, learning languages and moving around freely. Does this mean that blind children should stay at home and not get an education? Certainly not! Blind children attend schools and follow programmes which use different ways of teaching them how to read, write and do things people who can see do. The first people we know who showed an interest in the blind are the Ancient Egyptians. They did not only try to understand why people became blind, they also took care of their needs. The first country to have compulsory education for the blind is the United States in the 1880’s, and then Britain followed in 1893. Studies have shown that blind children learn best when they are in an open environment that doesn’t stop them from learning new things. Unfortunately, today 85% of all children with special educational needs in poorer countries do not get an education. And for children who are blind, 90% do not get an education. They simply do not have enough schools built especially for their needs.  The best solution to this problem is to have blind children and children who can see go to the same state schools. Of course, the state schools would have to be able to meet the needs of the special needs students too. The blind children in these schools should be given the opportunity to share the same experiences as their classmates who can see. The children and parents in these schools should be encouraged to become friends. There would have to be teachers who are specialised in education for the blind that would give advice to the teachers in the state schools. This relationship between the students and their parents should help show that we are not that different from each other. Having state schools accept blind children does not mean that we just put them in the same classrooms as children who can see. Blind students have more needs and there are some things that schools must do to be ready to teach them. Firstly, the schools must work together with people who are specialised in teaching the blind. They would give advice to teachers and prepare lessons and homework. Also, blind students often have to learn to do things differently than other students. For example, in primary school they learn to read using the Braille system. This means that because they can’t see, they learn to read special books by using their fingers, not their eyes. In addition, they also learn to move around without the help of other people and become more independent. All children with disabilities should go to school, get an education and have the same opportu-nities as children without them. If we all work together, there is nothing that we can not do.

1.Egypt was the first country to have compulsory education for the blind. 2. 85% of blind children in poorer countries do not get an education. 3. The first country to have compulsory education for the blind is the UK in 20 century. 4. 100% of children without disabilities go to school in rich countries. 5. Blind children should spend time together with children who can see. 6. Blind children in state schools learn extra skills. 7. Blind students in primary school learn to read using the Brasil system.

II. Complete the advertisement. Use the words correctly. Health & Fitness Club. Dear member, We now (1- finish) our work on the new ABBOTS - the difference is amazing! Six weeks ago we (2 -close) the club, and since then we (3- work) hard to improve all the public areas. We (4-add) several new machines to the gym and we've increased the (5 -long) of the swimming pool to 25 metres. Many of you (6 -be) members of (7-we) club for several years- to thank you for staying with us, we (8-reduce) gym, pool and class prices for you. And we have some new classes! You ever (9 - try) judo? Now (10 - be) your chance! If you (11- not visit) our new website yet, go to abbots.co.

III. Use the words in brackets to form one word for each gap 1-8. The School Lottery. In some big cities in Britain, identical houses in similar areas are sold for 1_______(difference) prices. Why is this? Each school in Britain has a list of streets it takes its students from. It can only take students from another area if there are not enough local students to take up all the places. Understandably, parents will pay more for a house in a street where their children could attend a better school. What about those who can't afford to pay more for their house? At the moment, if they don't have the 2______________(able) to pay, their children will have to go to a worse school which 3_________( probable) has more problem students and 4_________(low) exam results. Some people believe that this is 5___________(fair). They say that the children of poor parents who want a good 6____________(educate) should have the same chance as the children of richer parents. They suggest introducing 'lottery' schemes to decide which school a child will attend. The idea is that the better students will help the others and the teachers will be able to control them more 7________(easy). Obviously not everyone likes the idea. The parents who are upset are generally richer and more 8___________(power) than others, and they have a good chance of keeping things as they are. The ideal solution, of course, would be to make all schools better.

STEPMOTHER (After J. Greenwood)

I was born at Number Nineteen, Turnmill Street , London. My mother died when I was

five years old. She died fifteen minutes after my sister Polly was born. As my father

worked from morning till night, he had no time to look after Polly and me, so he married

again soon. He married Mrs. Burke, who was much younger and more good-looking than

my mother. But I did not like my stepmother and she did not like me. So we began to

hate each other; but she did not show her hatred when my father was at home. She beat

me very often and she made me work very hard. From morning till night she found work

for me to do.

One day a woman came to see my stepmother and they drank a lot of gin. All the

money that my father had left for our dinner was spent. When the woman went home, my

stepmother said to me in tears, «Oh, what shall I do, Jimmy, dear, what shall I do? Your

father will come home soon, and there is no dinner for him. He will beat me cruelly!

What shall I do, what shall I do? » I was sorry for her, she had tears in her eyes, and she

called me «Jimmy, dear» for the first time. I asked her if I could help her and she said at

once, « Oh, yes, you can help me! When your father comes home in the evening, Jimmy,

dear, tell him that you lost the money he left for our dinner. «How could I lose it? » I

asked in surprise. « You can tell him that I sent you to buy some food. Suddenly a big

boy run against you and the money fell out of your hand and you could not find it. That

will be very easy to say, Jimmy, dear, please, say it to your father!» »But he’ll give me a

good beating for it!» «Oh, no, he won’t! I shall not let him beat you, you may be sure!

Here is a penny for you, go and buy some sweets with it! »

So I went off and spent my penny on sweets. When I came back and opened the door,

my father was at home waiting for me with his waist-belt in his hand. I wanted to run out

of the room, but he caught me by the ear. «Stop a minute, young man!» he said. «What

have you done with the money?» “I lost it, Father,” said I in fear and looked at my

stepmother. “Oh, you lost it! Where did you lost it?” “In the street, Father. Ask Mrs.

Burke, she knows!” I told him what my stepmother had asked me to tell him. I was not

much surprised that he did not believe my story. But my stepmother’s words surprised

me very much. “Yes, he told me the same thing”, she said, “but he is a liar! He has spent

your money on sweets. I can’t beat him, he is your child, but you can give him a good

beating!” And she stood by while my father beat me with his belt till the blood showed. I
