Yerevan is the capital of our republic. It has more than one million population. Yerevan is a very old city. It was founded by the king Argishiti in 782 B.C The town was then called Erebuni, later this name was phonetically changed into Yerevan.
The centre of the city is
REPUBLIC SQUARE.
It is very nice especially for its singing fountains. In the evening we can see a lot of people there standing around the fountains and listening to the music.
Alexander Tamanyan
Alexander Tamanyan was the city architect of Yerevan. The square was designed by Alexander Tamanyan.
( 1878-1936)
Alexander Tamanyan is considered to be the squares chief architect.
THE CASCADE
Cascade is a giant stairway in Yerevan. The construction of the Cascade designed by architects Jim Torosyan, Aslan Mkhitaryan, Sargis Gurzadyan was launched in 1971 and completed in 1980.
MATENADARAN
The Matenadaran is a research Institute and a museum of ancient manuscripts. There are more than 16 thousand manuscripts in different languages and different topics-mathematics, astronomy, history, geography, literature and so on.

Some of the most impressing items in Matenadaran are the Msho Charentir, the largest manuscript that weighs over 27 kilos and the tiny church calendar of 1434 which not bigger than a passport photo and which weighs only 19 grams.
The statues of Movses Khorenatsi, Toros Roslin, Grigor Tatevatsi, Anania Shirakatsi, Mkhitar Gosh and Frik are in front of the main facade and the statues of Mesrop Mashtots and his disciple Koriun are situated at a lower level.
THE OPERA HOUSE
The most famous building in Yerevan is the Opera House . The building of the Opera House was designed by Alexander Tamanyan. It consists of two concert halls: The Aram Khachaturian concert hall and the Alexander Spendaryan Opera and Ballet National Theatre.

TSITSERNAKABERD
There is a memorial in Yerevan to the victims of the Genocide. The memorial stands on a hill called Tsitsernakaberd.
It was built in 1965, when we marked the 50 th anniversary of the genocide. 1,5 million trees were planted in Yerevan in that year.
The architects of Tsitsernakaberd are Kalashyan and Tarkanyan and the sculptor is Khachatryan.
Every year on the 24 th of April we mark the day of the Genocide. People with flowers go to Tsitsernakaberd to show their deep respect to the Armenians who died during the genocide.
The woman has a sword in her hand and a shield at her feet, symbolizing the idea that we want peace, we are ready to protect our country.
Mother Armenia in Victory Park
The most famous monument in Yerevan is Mother Armenia in Victory Park.
The monument symbolizes the participation of the Armenian people in World War II. The monument is 57 metre high.
